Solar ATAP Calculator 2026: Cost, Export Credits, Savings and Payback

A Solar ATAP calculation has two different values: solar you use immediately reduces the electricity you import, while surplus exported to TNB earns a domestic bill credit at the applicable Energy Charge only. Under the current Solar ATAP guideline, unused export credit does not roll to the next bill, cannot offset AFA, and the Solar ATAP contract runs for 10 years. That makes daytime usage and sensible system sizing central to payback—not just panel size.

What does Solar ATAP pay for exported solar electricity?

For a domestic general-tariff customer consuming 1,500 kWh or less monthly, TNB lists an Energy Charge of 27.03 sen/kWh. If consumption is above 1,500 kWh, the listed Energy Charge is 37.03 sen/kWh. Those are energy-charge figures—not a promise that every solar kWh has the same monetary value.


Key fact: domestic exported energy is not credited against capacity, network or AFA charges. Solar used behind the meter can reduce imported kWh, so its bill effect can differ from the export-credit rate.

This is a screening calculation. It excludes financing interest, maintenance, inverter replacement, roof work, future tariff/AFA changes, degradation, tax treatment, meter/connection costs and any charges not reduced on your bill.


Worked home example: show the assumptions, not a guaranteed result


Scenario only—not a customer result or savings promise. Assume a 5 kWac system forecasts 6,000 kWh/year; 70% is self-consumed; the household is on Domestic General tariff at 1,500 kWh/month or less; and AFA is excluded because it changes monthly.

Calculation: (4,200 × RM0.4443) + (1,800 × RM0.2703) = RM2,352.60.


If a homeowner receives written quotes of RM15,000–RM25,000 for a comparable 5 kW system, a simple, pre-finance payback at these assumptions is roughly 6.4–10.6 years. A confirmed RM3,000 SuRIA Home rebate would reduce the illustrative net outlay to RM12,000–RM22,000 and the simple-payback range to roughly 5.1–9.4 years. The quoted RM15,000–RM25,000 market range is a non-official market indication only; obtain current itemised proposals.


Why daytime self-consumption matters more under Solar ATAP


1. A self-consumed kWh can reduce the imported kWh on which applicable tariff components are charged.


2. A domestic exported kWh receives only the Energy Charge as a credit.


3. Any unused export credit is forfeited at the end of that billing period—there is no rollover.


4. Oversizing a system may increase midday export without increasing the usable bill benefit.


Useful load-shifting questions: Can air-conditioning, EV charging, pool pumps, laundry, refrigeration, office equipment or production loads operate when the system is generating? A battery may improve self-consumption but needs a separate economics calculation.


What Solar ATAP capacity can you install?

Domestic, three phase • 15 kW


Non-domestic • Up to 100% of maximum demand, subject to assessment and capped at 1,000 kW


A domestic application above 5 kW (single phase) or 15 kW (three phase) triggers a Connection Confirmation Check listed by SEDA/TNB at RM1,000. A technical assessment is a prerequisite where required; do not assume every roof or supply can take the desired capacity.


Before relying on a payback quote


• Ask for the forecast generation, self-consumption assumption and export assumption separately.


• Match proposals on kWac, panel/inverter brands, warranty, roof scope, monitoring, applications, meter work and exclusions.


• Check the provider in SEDA’s RPVSP directory.


• Use your actual bills and daytime pattern—not only average monthly spend.


• If you may qualify for SuRIA Home, confirm eligibility and commissioning timing before counting its value.
